Classes in physical education for women were first conducted in 1894. Barbour gymnasium for women was completed in 1898, in expectation of which Eliza M. Mosher, M.D., was named professor of hygiene and was put in charge of the Women's Gymnasium. The Women's Athletic Association was organized in 1905, and in 1908/09 a women's athletic field (Palmer Field) was purchased and equipped. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
